#LOST : In memoriam

This was a guest post on “The Buzz by Mike Schaffer.” Mike writes about public relations, social media, pop culture and sports. Mike is AMAZING. Stop by his blog and follow him on Twitter. Tell him I sent you!

Hi, my name is Andi Narvaez and I’m addicted to LOST. Like some of you, I was told by the rest of you, “you HAVE to watch it. It’s sooo good.” And not only did I watch it, I’ve devoted the last seven weeks of my life to catching up from the very first episode. That’s right. If there are six seasons, a total of 121 episodes, each 45 minutes long… you do the math. The sad thing is that after the second season, it wasn’t even worth it. But like a good addict, I couldn’t quit it.

The lesson I learned watching Will Smith in Men in Black

The lesson I learned watching Will Smith in Men in Black

Don’t act like you’ve never sat at home on a lazy Saturday night and given into watching whatever movie was on TV.

Tonight I’m watching Men in Black for (I’ll admit it) at least the fifth time and, once again, I came to the conclusion that one of my favorite scenes in the movie is when Will Smith shows up for MIB traning. During the simulation of a neighborhood under an alien attack the other trainees unleash a shooting frenzy, meanwhile Will Smith holds his fire – until a cardboard cutout of an eight year-old girl rolls out that is. Here is the quote from IMBD:

Twitter and the celebrity effect

Twitter and the celebrity effect

I have nothing against mainstream culture. In fact, I am very immersed in it. I watch a few TV shows pretty religiously – some good and some just plain awful, I listed to good music as much as I listen to ridiculous hip hop, I am a huge movie buff and , living up to my stereotypes, I can probably tell you about the latest celebrity gossip if you asked.

Full disclosure complete.

10 Things you must do to DO Las Vegas

This blog post (and the 29 more to come) is part of ProBlogger’s “31 Days to Write a Better Blog” challenge. Feel free to judge.

Write a List Post [Day 2 - 31DBBB]

One of my most brilliant moves ever was when I created an “offbeat” category for posts like these :)

In March 2009 I traveled to Las Vegas for 4 nights and 5 days. This was my second trip to Vegas and, because I learn new things every time, I have vowed to go there every year. Also, Las Vegas is in essence – escapism – and for five days out of the year, who can’t use that?

One last narcissistic post about narcissism

31 Mar

Last night Stephen Colbert (who else?) devoted a big chunk of his show to narcissism in America.

A friend once told me that writing is one of the most narcissistic professions, hobbies… things to do in the world and I agreed wholeheartedly. I still do. And today at work I mentioned to my co-worker that everyone and their moms have a blog now, maybe even two or three.

So, seeing as how I’m a part of the legions that blog, tweet and do everything in between…

The Strip Chronicles

Las Vegas 09: Day one.

How is Vegas you ask? Living up to it’s reputation I respond.

Our adventures started off with an adventure when we decided that we would walk to our hotel, Tropicana, from the airport. Bad call on our part but it turned out to be for the best since, after many turnarounds, dead ends and wrong directions, we were finally en route to our destination and able to stop by a store where beverages are sold and – not just that – Subway was right next door and we had ourselves the best dinner of our lives. No joke.

Why I love the Grammy Awards

Why I love the Grammy Awards

The two things I love most about the Grammys just happen to be what are quickly becoming my favorite words and the paradigm of our society – remix and collaboration.

Call me superficial but what I pay attention to the most every time I watch the Grammys are the performances. The list of winners often confuses me and leaves me standing in square one in terms of trying to figure out the direction in which the music industry is headed. The most I can ever say in reaction to someone receiving an award is, “Oh yeah, that was a good song.” The performances, however, now those are truly indicative of the age we live in.

My recent addictions

My recent addictions

I have been wanting to write for a long time, however, at some point, which officially came to an end a few minutes ago today, my desire to write was trumped and overwhelmed by all the possible post ideas living in the clutter that is my mind.

So I thought it was only fair that my first post be about the one thing that takes me away from reality even if just for a few hours – television. But, before I continue let it be known that the television I’m referring to, with perhaps the one exception you will catch on to in just a moment, is one that takes me away without numbing my brain. I’m talking good TV. The kind you don’t feel gulity about watching when you get back home from a long day at work. Or,  put another way,the kind I would NEVER engage in with a bag of potato chips on my lap. These shows call for a quality home-cooked, silverware-required meal eaten right off the best TV tray you can find at Target.
Take the best and most recent of my addictions – It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Thanks to my best friend I have caught on and still trying to catch up on the greatness that is this show. The shows producers, who happen to star in the show, are geniuses. The show is raw, smart, down-to-earth, has an unscripted feel to it and is HILARIOUS. In the show’s own words – wilcard bitches!
Then there is Dexter. The show about the Miami Police Department blood expert who also happens to be a serial killer. Although in retrospect there is nothing about this show that I would normally like, Dexter’s character although very kept to himself is actually really clever and hilarious. I’m very much into that – so much so that it doesn’t take a great plot to get me to tune in on Sundays.
My beloved Office, needs no blurb or introduction. Although I must say that the long distance relationship thing that Pam and Jim are trying to keep up with has been stressing me out lately. I’m ready though… and it makes happy to see that Michael has found a fellow nerd to be his love interest.
Just because I live with roommates and we all like to kick it old school, Jeopardy is part of the line-up every day of the week. There’s nothing like yelling out wrong answers in question form and listen to Trebek make excruciating small talk with the contestants.
And moving on to that exception I was talking about – America’s Next Top Model. Say what you will but we all need shows like these in our inventory and I actually believe that I made a decent choice. Pretending to be a fashion expert and modeling critic for an hour a week never hurt anyone.
Other  shows to watch and LOVE: Arrested Development.
And that is it.
