Google gets you to direct mail yourself

Google gets you to direct mail yourself

I just saw this on Life Hacker (catching up with my feed) and thought that it was both cool and brilliant. For the price of an envelope and a stamp, you can get stickers for your keyboard and become a Gmail keyboard-shortcut wiz. And if you’re not already using Gmail, it might be time for you to start to. Anyone who can bring stickers back has the right idea. And anyone who can get you to direct mail yourself gets props.

Hitting the social media ground running

I believe it’s the way to go.

Today, Sean Wood, media specialist for KGBTexas Public Relations / Advertising, and i made a presentation about social media to our company’s PR team and a few other co-workers who are interested in hearing what we had to, humbly, say about what is quickly developing and changing our industry.

We discussed making connections, networking, participating, experimenting, applications, opportunities, challenges, privacy, commenting and whether or not to let the doors of two-way communication swing wide open, which our very own account executive and publications manager, Melanie Thompson, blogged about today as well. The question is – what now?

Overwhelmed by Hope and Change

Overwhelmed by Hope and Change

As of Tuesday, November 4, 2008 the country has been in an uproar. And with good reason.

I would have loved to blog the second the news were announced and president-elect Barack Obama made his acceptance speech in Chicago but the moment and the days that have followed have been overwhelming.

By now you have probably read or heard about everything that has surfaced online, on TV and in print in reference to Obama’s victory. Already you can see how much this man has galvanized the country into caring and becoming proactive in whatever their realm of interest or expertise is.

Social Media is the World

31 Oct

I was the “Market Crash” for the office Halloween party this year. This weekend I wil be the Corpse Bride. I consider this a great success and I thought I would write an update on that. You never know who is reading your blog and anxiously waiting for some follow-up.

But enough about Halloween costumes… I’m growing up.
And on the topic of users following your blogs, updates and things that are scary… I have been all about social media for the past few days, trying to teach myself how to make good use of it for things not necessarily related to my need for an outlet for self-expression. As any good PR practicioner (do we still use that word? I JUST stepped out of college where the language of textbooks is sometimes the one and only and every time I say “practicioners” I get strange looks. And with good reason-words like “practicioners” don’t stand a chance in a world of junkies, geeks, peeps, techies, you name it) in his/her 20s in the year 2008 should do, I am staying on top of trends, learning from what others who have years upon years of experience in the field are doing and have to say, figuring out who the influential people and publications are, etc. etc. Thanks to my ever-growing number of social media accounts, however, this task is turning out to be at the very least a part-time job.
One thing I am very thankful for is other people’s own efforts for trying to keep everything as current as possible and, more than anything, doing so in a way that is refreshing and enjoyable once you get past the impact of the first blast of all that is out there. Once again, I am given a reason to believe that this world is a wonderful place because of the minds that inhabit it and happily contribute to it. Oh… but you can go ahead and take Joe the Builder… wait… that’s Tito… well… take them both out of that statement.
Happy Halloween!
